Why we celebrate the festival of Maha-Shivaratri

In Hinduism, people celebrate the festival of Shivratri. But do you know why we celebrate the festival of Shivratri? Let’s understand its mythological significance. It is said that when the churning of the ocean (Samudra-Manthan) was done, then there was a poisoned name Halaahal come from it before from the Ambrosia. This poison was so venomous that due to which entire world was in danger of ending in a moment.

No one, neither god nor devil was able to cure this world of it. Then everyone had worshiped Lord Shiva. After which Lord Shiva consume that venomous toxic poison to save this world. But Lord Shiva stopped it in his throat, due to which his throat became blue.

For this reason, Lord Shiva is also called Neelkantha and under the same mythological belief, fasting is given to please Lord Shiva and express the gratitude.
