Makar Sankranti 2018: Why we celebrate the festival of Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is one of the biggest festivals of Hinduism. According to Hindu religion, Sun travels in 12 zodiacs throughout the year. When the Sun enters the Capricorn, it is called Makar Sankranti. On this day, the Sun turns southward to Northward. This day there is a lot of importance in fasting and charity.

This time Makar Sankranti is happening on Sunday, January 14, 2018. The significance of Makar Sankranti can be summed up with the fact that Bhishma Pitamah had also chosen the day of Makar Sankranti to relieve his body during the Mahabharata period. Lord Sun also visited the house to meet his son Shani on the day of Makar Sankranti. That is why the Capricorn zodiac is ruled by Saturn.

There is a religious belief that charity and donations given on this day are 100 times more fruitful. On this day you can do charity according to your reverence and devotion. Most people donate khichadi, sesame, jaggery, ghee, rice, garment etc. on this auspicious day.
