This year the festival of Mahashivaratri will be celebrated on 13th February. On the same day, Lord Shiva consume that venomous toxic poison to save this universe. It is believed that on this day the marriage of Lord Shiva & Parvati happened. However, Shivaratri is celebrated every month, but the Shivratri which comes twice in a year, which is in Phalgun and Shravan month (Hindu Calendar), is of greater significance.
This Mahashivaratri is becoming a supremacy after 51 years. On this day you will have to go to any Lord Shiva temple. Now you will have to offer a mixture of water, milk and gangajal in a pot/lota (globular). Apart from this, you will offer belpatra, dhatura, flowers and ash etc.
If you do not have the strength or will to do so much then you should only offer a globular of plain water. Lord Shiva will fulfil all your wishes.
